University of Pennsylvania’s STARTALK Intensive Urdu program is currently accepting applications for Summer 2012. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan with influences from Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Sanskrit and is one of the most critical languages for understanding the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.

STARTALK  is part of a national effort to enhance learning of less commonly taught languages in schools.

This is the fourth year of this program and the second year the course is offered as credit bearing. STARTALK funds are used to subsidize the cost of tuition, students receive UPenn transcripts and 1credit transferable to any university in the US.  There are several scholarships available to students who want to continue studying Urdu in college.

Penn STARTALK Urdu program will take place from June 29th to July 20th. Prior knowledge of the language is not required. The program has space for 12 high school students. Students will benefit from instruction by highly distinguished Penn faculty members who are leading experts in their fields.  A standards– based curriculum, high quality learning materials, and a range of activities and projects employed to maximize students’ acquisition of Urdu linguistic skills as well as gain familiarity with the cultural knowledge needed to successfully engage in meaningful interactions.

The program provides a rich experience in the culture, history, art, music, cuisine, politics and religion of South Asia. This will be an excellent opportunity for students to receive an embedded experience of university life at an Ivy League institution and will help demonstrate wide interests on their college applications and resumes enabling them to compete more effectively for jobs in an increasingly global world. Fluency in Urdu is a highly desirable skill for students interested in pursuing careers in government, army, politics, International non profits, IT, or a global company.
