DC native, Quratulain Balouch Performs for APPNA
By: Rida Naeem
Friday, July 6th, Pakistan’s up and rising 23 year old singer – Quratulain Balouch (QB), famed for her Coke Studio performances and drama Humsafar’s soundtrack, performed at the Gaylord Hotel at the National Harbor for a special event exclusive to the Association of Physicians of Pakistani-Descent of North America (APPNA) members. A native of the Washington, DC area, she teamed with local Pakistani music band, Hum the Band, who played melodious rock/pop inspired tunes.
Wearing a black top, bright red lips, and her signature hair, QB started the show with her rendition of “Akhyaan Nu Rain Day”, originally by the renowned folk singer, Reshma. She added her own twist into the song and made it a modern day version. She continued to sing covers of classical singers’ songs (i.e. Lambi Judia by Reshma, Tere Ghum Lag Jawan Menu by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mein Tenu Sumjhanwa Ki by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan) and some songs she is known for such as her performance on Coke Studio with Jal the Band on “Panchi” and “Dekha Na Tha” with Bilal Khan for a tribute to Pakistan’s first pop star, Alamgir. She closed the show with her famed possession, “Woh Humsafar Tha” during which teenagers and adults were swooned by her smooth, husky voice and were lost in the element.
During her songs, QB was able to mesmerize the audience and was even able to get Desi Aunties and Uncles to get out of their seats and dance in a ‘most pit’ type of manner. All in all, her performance and involvement of the crowd – no matter the age – made the concert quite enjoyable and brought many people back to their memories of when they listened to the now “classic” songs.
