Comic Relief: Redevelopment with laughter

Continuing its campaign to raise funds for the flood victims of Pakistan, ADP organized another fundraising event- this time with a twist. The organizers, Usman Hassan, Adnan Pathan, and Daniyal Noorani, realized that after months of fundraising efforts it was time for some comic relief. Consequently, they brought together three sparkling comedians, Azhar Usman, Dean Obeidallah and Aron Kader, for a comedy show at MIT on November 12th, 2010. The event was supported and hosted by PaksMIT, the Pakistani Students Federation at MIT.
The comedy show was received well and Aamir Mian, one of the organizers, called the event “incredibly successful”. The attendance numbered over 700, raising over $12,000 through tickets and other donations.

According to Mian, using comedy to raise awareness about Pakistani flood victims was a unique way to approach fundraising. It had distinct advantages since it targeted a younger audience and engaged them in the campaign to help the flood victims. The show also infused new energy and positivity through some well-aimed laughter (as opposed to traditionally somber fundraising efforts).
Uzaib Saya, a volunteer at the event, highlighted another aspect: “this event was really important because it helped exemplify the very vibrant discussion and type of activities that are taking place (in Boston) since the floods, and it has certainly mobilized different pockets of students and young professionals.”

Azhar Usman, Dean Obeidallah and Aron Kader put on stellar performances that incorporated current affairs and questioned common stereotypes, especially about Muslims and Arabs in America. All three have performed internationally and collected a series of impressive accomplishments under their belts including awards, television shows and theater.
Dean Obeidallah encapsulated the commitment to the cause of flood victims by rising above his own circumstances to present a laugh inducing performance. Due to transport problems, Obeidallah arrived on the venue barely five minutes before he went on stage. He had just reached Boston after back to back shows in Dubai and New York and looked drained out. However, the moment he stepped on stage, Aamir Mian narrates, “boom boom boom, his energy was incredible!” In fact, Mian found all three comedians’ performances amazing.
After the great success of this show, the organizers are looking into putting up more events of a similar nature. The campaign to help those in Pakistan goes on and will only gain momentum if people like Pathan, Hassan and Noorani keep up their hard work.
