: Red Bull Paperwings take off with three pilots from
Pakistan to Austria.
The much-awaited Red Bull Paper
Wings National Finale took off at LUMS. Winners in three
categories of Longest Distance, Longest Airtime and
Aerobatics from the three urban capitals of the country,
Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad all converged to take
part in the final round of the competition.
Red Bull organized an air show
prior to the start of the competition in the cricket
ground behind the Sports Complex. Mr. Hussain, an aeronautical
expert, put up a show with remote controlled model airplanes
that kept everyone present, captivated.
The competition kicked off at 3pm.
First up was the Longest Distance category in which
7 contestants participated. The category was, perhaps,
the most strenuous one, as it required not only full
concentration and calculation but also a colossal amount
of force of the participant in an attempt for the plane
to cover the largest distance possible. After a tough
competition, Rameez Jahangir from Karachi stood victorious
in the Longest Distance category.
Next up was the Longest Airtime
category. Contestants were required to fly their planes
in a manner that they stayed in air for extended periods
of time. Zain Hassan from Karachi won this category.
The final category was Aerobatics,
which required participants to model their planes out
of paper in whichever manner possible and there were
marks awarded for the design of the plane. Hasham Toor
won aerobatics from LUMS.
The three winners are now going
to be flown to Salzburg, Austria for the international
finale at Hanger 7 to represent Pakistan on May 1st
and 2nd 2009. Red Bull Paper Wings competition was yet
another out-of-the-box idea that the leading energy
drink company came up with and shows its commitment
to support the talented youth around the globe.
