Flower Accent

Tell us where you got your training as an event decorator:

I got my bachelors degree from The College of Home Economics in Lahore, and later I joined the New York Botanical Gardens (Bronx) in 1995 where I worked for the floral design program. After becoming a licensed florist, I completed an internship program and later was hired by one of the floral instructors in NYBG as a designer at Distinctive Floral Designs in Chelsea, NY. I have been working in this field for about a decade now; at the start of my career I was freelancing in the city, however in 1997 I decided to start my own company, FlowerAccent which is based in Westchester, NY.

How does your company differ from others?

It is our goal to provide extraordinary flower décor; we offer personalized service in order to meet a client’s individual taste and needs. Also, all our flowers are conditioned properly, so they are fresh and in full bloom on the day of the event. We prefer using rich colors in my centerpieces such as shades of red, fuchsia and rust.

What is the cost of a typical wedding décor?

The client is first asked to provide a budget for the flower décor. According to the client’s budget, a rough proposal is made for the flower selection; all the while staying on course for the whole theme of the event. Our wedding décor packages range from $2,000 up to $6,000; this also varies depending on the guest list and the amount of flowers being used. We have to take into account the stage decor, reception table centerpieces, buffet arrangements and the card table arrangements.

What kind of arrangements do you do?

All our arrangements vary; some of our very popular designs are of a contemporary look. On a recent wedding, we used green den rhodium orchids, rust calla lilies and fuchsia dahlias. To incorporate the fall theme, we also used wanda orchids, fuchsia callas and green mini orchids which were placed in tall glass vases. The linen was fuchsia and rust with gold tissue overlays.

In another wedding, we coordinated the flowers with the bride’s outfit. We used an assortment of red, orange and gold roses. The stage décor composed mostly of red and orange roses with an accent of gold painted palm leaves. A gold sequence organza fabric also provided as the backdrop of the stage. Square glass vases were placed on the reception tables each with almost 3 dozen red and orange roses. We also incorporated the same red and orange roses in the wedding cake.

What should a client know before approaching you?

The clients should always do some homework before our meeting; they should know what style and color scheme that they would prefer for their ceremony, reception and wedding. The dates of the wedding, and their overall budget should also be calculated before contacting us. When the client comes prepared, it becomes easier for us to estimate the amount of flowers needed. Clients should allow themselves at least 6-8 months to prepare for the flower décor.
