If there was one thing missing from Lahore’s
food scene, it was an international coffee house. Well,
fret no more. Gloria Jean’s Coffees have come
all the way from the land down under and taken Lahoris
by storm. Now there is some confusion on the Gloria
Jean’s website as far as its real origins –
seems like the coffee brand originated in the US and
then it was taken to Australia where it became a chain
of coffee shops.
Already being dubbed as “the best coffee in town”
by some connoisseurs, Gloria Jean’s has opened
one outlet on that road whose name escapes me at this
time (you know the one that goes from Hussain Chowk
to the old Phaatak, perpendicular to M.M.Alam Road!).
Another one is in the making in Defense’s Y-Block.
Meanwhile, CTC is facing some healthy competition at
least on the coffee menu.

Gloria Jean’s offers a variety
of espresso drinks, smoothies, and gourmet teas. We
tried the green tea and café latte; both were
exceptionally good. The coffee shop also carries a
selection of cakes, brownies, and also deli sandwiches.
We tried the walnut brownie and the double fudge brownie,
both par excellence!
The ambience is very clean, open, and
casual without other guests being in your face. Compared
to Coffee, Tea, and Company (aka CTC), the atmosphere
is less noisy and crowded, and the setting allows
for casual conversation as well as working solo on
your laptop. For the few months that Lahoris can sit
outside, there’s ample seating by the curbside.
Bottomline, Gloria Jean’s is a great addition
to Lahore’s food scene. While it’s never
good to see global chains wipe off indigenous stores
and local flavor, some healthy competition for the
local stores won’t do anyone harm!
